The West Valley School Community
Where Do We All Fit In?

There are three main parent volunteer organizations that work together with the Faculty and Principal at West Valley School.  These groups are the School Site Council (SSC), the West Valley Parent Teacher Association (WVPTA), and the West Valley Educational Endowment Fund (WVEEF).  Although each has a different emphasis and role, all of the groups have a common set of priorities.  These are:

To support academic instruction and safety in the classrooms for all students.

To support enrichment programs that would not otherwise be available to the children (such as fine/performing arts, sports, and technology programs) which are implemented in ways that enhance academic instruction.

To support the funding needs of the above priorities.

The School Site Council (SSC) is responsible for bringing together representatives of the entire school community to continually assess and improve the school.  SSC's main focus is to support and strengthen the core academic program.  The SSC is comprised of staff and parent representatives elected by their peers.  SSC is responsible for developing and maintaining the School Based Coordinated Plan (SBCP), and for establishing a budget that is consistent with the SBCP.  SSC's budget is funded entirely by supplemental funds from the State.  This money is primarily used to fund staff development, a SBCP coordinator, a media clerk (librarian), instructional supplies, and computer hardware and software.  SSC meetings are open to all parents and are generally held one Wednesday each month in the Staff Lounge.

The West Valley Parent Teacher Association (WVPTA) is responsible for coordinating the efforts of parent volunteers to directly benefit the students, and to promote understanding and cooperation between the faculty and the parents.  WVPTA's main funding source is Walk-A-Thon.  The money raised by Walkathon is used to fund many programs including Exploration Day, the Fine Arts/Enrichment program, the Student/Faculty Directory, capital improvements, teacher's classroom funds, the Natural Sciences and recycling programs and art supplies for all grades.  WVPTA meetings are open to all parents and are generally held on the first Thursday of the month in the Staff Room.

The West Valley Educational Endowment Fund (WVEEF) was founded to build a stable funding source to support additional staff resources as recommended by the SSC.  WVEEF's goal is to be able to raise enough money so that it can make salary commitments a year in advance.  While originally chartered as an affiliate of CEEF, WVEEF has become an independent, private non-profit foundation which raises funds for the sole use of the West Valley School.  The WVEEF's main funding sources are from direct donations by West Valley parents and families and other fundraising activities.  The monthly WVEEF meetings are open to all and are generally held once a month on Tuesday evenings the Staff Room.
