School Safety Plan and Program
John Muir has developed a school wide behavior support program which promotes safety, respect, tolerance, and a positive climate throughout the school. All classrooms have their own classroom rules which complement school rules. A Family Handbook is sent home at the beginning of every school year which lists the dos and don'ts as well as how parents and staff can cooperate with each other to provide the best climate for the students. All students are informed of the district's as well as the school's zero tolerance policy the first week of school. All students are asked to sign an agreement to adhere to this policy. Starting in the Fall of 2003 the school also received a 2 year grant from Peace builders. This grant provides money and outside resources to help decrease aggressive student behavior, promote tolerance and mutual respect among students as well as promoting a more positive relationship between students and teachers.
John Muir is committed to the safety and security of students, teachers, staff, and parents. Our safety plan includes the following key components:
1. Students at John Muir need to be supervised at all times. Teachers and staff are responsible for the safety of all students. During school hours students are under the supervision of a teacher or staff member whether they are in the classroom or outside in the school yard. Students are encouraged to come to school only when there is adult supervision present. They are also encouraged to leave the school premises after dismissal.
2. Teachers and staff members of John Muir are required by law to report any cases of suspected child abuse or child neglect. Reports are investigated by the Department of Social Services to determine if any follow-up on the report is necessary.
3. John Muir has developed a comprehensive disaster plan in case of such an occurrence. A comprehensive disaster drill is held once a year. In addition fire drills are held monthly. Disaster supplies and equipment are updated every year.
4. John Muir works closely with CUSD to promote and maintain an orderly school environment. The school enforces all rules pertaining to student discipline and zero tolerance.
5. John Muir works closely with the San Jose Police Department. The police department sends the school regular safety alerts concerning criminal activities within the city of San Jose. The school will contact the police department should assistance be needed.
6. John Muir adheres to district policies which prohibit sexual harassment or discrimination of any kind. The written policy is posted in various public areas around campus. Students are also informed of such a policy and the consequences of not following these rules.
7. John Muir students are required to dress in such a manner that is neat, clean, and safe. They need to follow good grooming practices. They also need to wear clothes and shoes that do not compromise safety or modesty or that is disruptive to the educational process.
8. The physical environment at John Muir is maintained. Adequate lighting, repairs to inside and outside structures as well as the grounds are essential to the physical well being of students, teachers, staff, and parents.
