Attendance Procedures

ABSENCES, ATTENDANCE HOTLINE - 253-5250 (4:30 p.m.-8:00 a.m.):

Student absences must be reported every day that a child is unable to attend school. All absences should be telephoned to the office (253-5250) by 9:00 a.m. Please give the child's name (spell last name), room number, date of absence, your name and the reason the child is not attending school.

If your child is ill, please call to report the illness. This is especially important with any contagious illness. Extended absences may be avoided if children are kept home at the first sign of illness. Children should not come to school if they have a temperature above normal or have vomited within 24 hours.

ARRIVAL TIMES & TARDIES: Children are to arrive between 8:15 and 8:30 a.m. Supervision is provided at this time.

Students who are late for class must go to the office for an "Admit Slip." Students miss valuable instruction and unnecessarily interrupt their classes when they arrive late. Intervention at the earliest time is the best method of reducing the number of students who are habitually absent or tardy. Parents are notified by letter of a student's excessive unexcused tardies or absences.

DISMISSAL: Children are to leave the school grounds immediately upon dismissal. Supervision is not provided after dismissal. All students awaiting their parents to arrive are expected to wait around the large tree by the school office. Children are not to play on the Blacktop, Big Toy or Kindergarten playground after dismissal. No games are to be played. Primary children should not wait for upper grade dismissal unless supervised by a parent. The office staff and custodian do not reopen classrooms after the teacher has left for the day. Forgotten homework will need to be completed the following day. Please make arrangements with other parents to car pool to assist you in having your children leave school on time.

INDEPENDENT STUDY CONTRACT: An Independent Study Contract should be requested for students absent 5 to 10 days for reasons other than illness. The contract consists of schoolwork that is to be completed while the student is absent and returned to his/her teacher upon re-entering school. At least two weeks prior to the absence, contact your child's teacher and the school office to have a contract prepared.

LEAVING EARLY: Regnart is a closed campus. Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds unless a parent or a parent designee accompanies them. A parent or a parent designee must first sign out the student from the office. The teacher will then be contacted who will send the child to the office. Parents should not go directly to the classroom. If a child should need to leave school for a medical or dental appointment, a note from the parent stating that your child will need to leave campus early should be sent to your child's teacher.

In case of illness, no child is sent home until the parent is contacted and plans are made for transportation. Transportation is the responsibility of the parent. Any adult, other than a parent, picking up a child must be listed on the Health/Enrollment card.

Discipline & Safety

DISCIPLINE: Teachers and staff will highlight school and classroom rules. We will emphasize positive guidance and direction. We will be firm, consistent and fair in our discipline. Behavior expectations are that every Regnart student behave in a way that shows a caring regard for others. We will emphasize high standards and insist on respect and self-control. On the following pages are more specific school rules.

MEDICATION: No medications are to be kept in the classroom. Medication may be administered by school personnel when a blue Administration of Medication form signed by the doctor and parent is on file in the school office. Most medication can be timed so that a parent can give it at home. Rare exception may be the giving of emergency medication at the time of a bee sting or the giving of sugar in the case of an insulin reaction. A teacher, nurse or secretary never administers aspirin to a student. If it is necessary for the child to have medication at school, the required permission form must be obtained at the school office. Students should never bring medication to school in lunches or back packs. All medication must be kept in the Nurses' office.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT: The C.U.S.D. maintains an educational, employment and business environment free from harassment, intimidation, or insult on the basis of an individual's sex. Action will be taken when necessary to eliminate such practices. Within the educational environment, sexual harassment is prohibited between students, between employees and students and between non-students and students. Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature by an individual will constitute sexual harassment. Effort will be made to protect the privacy of parties involved in a complaint. Files pertaining to complaints handled under this process will not be made available to the general public.

TELEPHONE USE: Students should use the school phone for Emergencies Only. Emergencies are not forgotten homework, books, milk money, lunches, rides home, rain, going to a friends house, etc. We ask that, whenever possible, you not call the school and ask us to interrupt a class to give your child a message. Please try to make your communications in the morning before your child comes to school. Students who attend scout meetings, science clubs or other activities after school need to make arrangements in advance and not expect to use the phone to inform their parents when they are finished.

Emergency Procedures

EMERGENCIES - Fire, Earthquake, Evacuation: Please DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL. We must keep our phone lines open for emergency purposes. We are well equipped to handle these situations. We are on an immediate Telephone Alert System with our District Office. If our phones are out of order, we have a CB radio set up. Many staff members are Red Cross and CPR certificated. First aid kits, extra clean water, food packets, etc. are available on campus. Emergency tags will be used as a means of identification for each child. If evacuation becomes necessary, the instructions on the Enrollment/Health Card will be followed. It is imperative that you always keep all contact information up to date on this card. No child will be sent anywhere until a parent or designee is located. By your understanding our procedures, knowing how busy we are attending to the safety of the children, and how much we may have to use the phone, we need to reiterate how important your cooperation is in Not Calling the School. Be assured, you will be contacted if it is necessary to do so. Remember to put complete names of all family members, friends or neighbors that you give permission to pick up your child on the Enrollment/Health Card. The child will not be released to anyone unless that person's name is on the card.

The District maintains a continuing plan to provide for student safety when school is in session. The school staff is prepared to make prompt and responsible decisions in any situation that could threaten the safety of students. The decision to close schools before the regularly scheduled closing time might have to be made. This need could arise from a relatively minor emergency, such as a prolonged interruption in power, or from a major event, such as fire, disastrous earthquake or severe storm. Evacuation would take place as soon as it appeared safe to do so.

Parents should develop an evacuation plan with their children and be sure that children understand its details. It is important that a calm, matter-of-fact approach be used in discussing possible emergencies with your children. Neighbors might want to establish cooperative procedures for evacuation of their children from school. Evacuation plans should not include use of private cars as traffic conditions may prohibit their use. If a major emergency occurs when schools are in session, information will be broadcast to parents over local radio station KXRX, 1500 KHZ; KLOK, 1170 KHZ; KEEN, 1370 KHZ and local television station KNTV, Channel 11.

Visitors and Volunteers

VISITORS ON SCHOOL CAMPUS: You are always welcome to visit our school. All parent volunteers and visitors to Regnart are required to register in the school office upon entering school grounds. A log of visitors' names is kept in the school office. Visitors and volunteers are required to wear nametags at all times during their visit and sign out upon leaving school grounds. Our visiting days for prospective new students are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please call ahead for an appointment as no more than two visitors are allowed in a classroom at one time.

VOLUNTEERING: Parents have the opportunity to be involved in our instructional program as art docents, library aides, technology aides, Art Docents, Discovery Day presenters, and physical fitness coordinators. Parents also enrich our instructional program by hosting fund-raising activities (Walk-a-thon and Carnival) and by spending thousands of hours volunteering for classroom and office assistance, newsletter duplicating and collating, and field trip transportation. Parents influence the school through Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety and Health and Welfare. Please volunteer! A volunteer sign-in book is located in the office. All volunteers are requested to sign in prior to going to the classrooms and wear a school badge.

All volunteers must have a current PPD Mantoux Tuberculin Test on file in the office. Please ask the office staff for information.

General Information

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS: Weekly after school programs are available through community services. Brochures and enrollment forms are distributed to all students when they are received at school. Also, read the weekly school newspaper (Reporter) for notices of other opportunities.

BICYCLING TO SCHOOL: For safety reasons, only students who are in the 3rd grade and above may ride their bicycles to school. Our parking lot is congested with many cars and vans. Students younger than 3rd grade do not have the skills, knowledge or judgment in making proper decisions in manipulating around the traffic. Students with small bikes are also harder to see especially with the many larger vans and utility vehicles driven today. If your older child chooses to ride a bike to school, make sure you give instructions on how to follow traffic patterns and ride carefully. As soon as students reach school property, they should dismount from their bikes and walk them to the bike rack. All students should lock their bikes. Helmets are required.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS: If you wish to acknowledge your child's birthday at school, please check first with his/her teacher. A simple treat or trinket may be passed to each student prior to recess, lunch or going home to avoid using instruction time. Please do not send balloons, flowers or other gifts to school. Birthday party invitations may not be passed out at school.

CLASS PARTIES/STAFF GIFTS: Individual gifts to staff are not encouraged or discouraged. However, collections for gifts or class parties are NOT to be taken without prior approval of the principal. All letters requesting donations must be reviewed by the principal prior to distribution to students and families. This includes unscheduled or surprise classroom parties.

INTERNET AND COMPUTER LAB USE: Any student using the Internet is required to review and sign a C.U.S.D. Internet Contract. Parents must also sign it. In addition, students are expected to abide by the Technology Lab rules at all times - including use at recess and lunch times. A student who disregards the rules will lose the privilege of using school computers for a designated time. Parents will be informed of misuses.

LOST AND FOUND: All articles found on the school grounds are placed on the clothes rack near the Kindergarten rooms. Parents or students should check in their classroom and the rack for lost items. The clothes rack will be displayed from 8:15-3:30 daily. At the end of each month, unclaimed articles will be donated to a worthy cause. Name tags in clothing and on lunch boxes help in the return of lost articles.

LUNCH PROGRAM: A hot lunch program is available to all full-day students and P.M. Kindergartners only. All lunches are prepaid with money placed in each student's account. Envelopes are available in the school office for deposits. Each student will have a pin number that is entered into a computer pad when a lunch is purchased. The pin number will remain with the student for the duration of attendance in the C.U.S.D. Funds from the previous year are rolled over for the next. Returning students should use their pin numbers the first day of school. For questions please contact the Nutrition Services Office (253-5250) between 10:30-2:00 daily. Hot lunches may not be taken off campus.

SCHOOL LUNCH PRICE - $2.00-MILK 50¢ A monthly menu is sent home with each child in the Wednesday folder and free or reduced price lunches are available to those students who qualify. Please see the district booklet in the first day packet for forms. Milk is sold on a daily basis. Forgotten lunches are to be brought to the school office and not delivered directly to the child's classroom. The lunches should be marked with the child's name and room number. Please tell your child to check in the office anytime they do not have a lunch. Students may not wait by the parking lot or the street for parents to bring lunches.

MOVING/TRANSFER: If a student is moving from Regnart School, please notify the office several days ahead of time. This allows the teacher time to prepare placement information for the new school. For a student moving out of the country, we request that a parent come to the school office on the last day of attendance to obtain the student's records. The Cumulative Record Folder will be sent directly to the new school within the continental United States.

REPORT CARDS/CONFERENCES: Report cards are issued three times a year at the end of each trimester. Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled early in the first trimester. If a conference is desired at any other time during the school year, please contact your child's teacher to make arrangements. We encourage parents to share any information that will help teachers to work more effectively with students. Teachers are not available for conferences or phone calls during class hours.

SCHOOL LIBRARY: Students may use the school library for research, quiet reading or to check out books during school time under the supervision of the Media Aide or their classroom teachers. Students who have lost or damaged library or textbooks will be required to pay for the books. Parent volunteers are always needed to work in the library. Please contact the school office if you can help.

SKATEBOARDS, SCOOTERS AND ROLLER BLADES: While we would like to encourage students to walk to school, skateboards, scooters and roller blades may be used, but at the wise discretion of the parents. Students must be able to use these "wheels" very confidently and cautiously, watch for other walkers and be observant of traffic. Any student using these must remove the roller blades and put on shoes; fold up the scooter; or get off the skateboard at the bike rack at the edge of the school property. These items must not be used on the campus at all. Any student who ignores this rule will lose the privilege of "rolling" to school. Teachers will provide space in the classrooms for storing the items during the day.

VIEWING YOUR CHILD'S RECORD: You may review your child's cumulative record at any time by calling the office for an appointment with the principal.

WEDNESDAY FOLDERS: Each child receives a folder that will go home each Wednesday of the school year. School papers, lunch menus, field trip permission slips, the school newsletter (Reporter) and other information will be sent home in this manner. The folder is returned to school on Thursday after the parent has signed the communication form. You can always access the district web site for additional information. Homework Policy

At Regnart we believe that homework has a definite purpose, that it enriches and extends what is learned in school and that it encourages students to develop responsibility and good work habits. In assigning homework, teachers consider the ability and maturity of their pupils and have reasonable expectations. Parents can help their child and their child's teacher by:

  • providing an appropriate attitude toward homework,
  • having the necessary materials available (dictionaries, pencils, papers),
  • ensuring that their child sets aside a regular time for homework,
  • making certain that their child has a quiet, well-lit place in which to work,
  • following through on suggestions from their child's teacher.
Students can learn responsibility through homework if they:
  • write down all assignments and do not trust to memory,
  • write down the date the assignment is due and make sure it is correct,
  • ask questions about any confusing parts of the assignment, and are sure they understand what the teacher expects,
  • understand the purpose of the assignment before leaving class,
  • before leaving school make sure they have all the materials they need to take home for the assignment,
  • schedule time appropriately to complete assignments.

HOMEWORK REQUEST: Parents may request homework through the school office for a child that is out ill. The work should be requested before noon and the teacher will have the homework ready for the student that day 1/2 hour after the dismissal of the student's class. If the requests are made later in the day, the work will be available the next day. A homework request form will be completed and given to your child's teacher. All homework will be in the school office for pick up.

There are times when teachers cannot get materials ready because of scheduled parent meetings, student conferences, or staff meetings that occur during lunch time and immediately after school. Tuesday is an especially busy day because of staff development and meetings.

NO HOMEWORK EVENINGS: When there is a school-wide function in the evening, such as Back-to-School Night, Open House or International Celebration, students will not have homework due the next day.
