A "Whale" of an Assembly!

Did your kids seem to know an awful lot about whales last week?
Regnart experienced an educational and entertaining presentation on
whales, presented by The Ocean Adventure, a husband and wife
team of Wayne and Karen Brown. Mr. Brown is a marine biologist;
Mrs. Brown, a scuba diving instructor. They talked about the different
types of whales, their unique characteristics, and showed actual
whale artifacts including killer whale teeth, a 7' long narwhal tusk,
and the baleen strainers of the bowhead whale which can grow
up to 12' long. They also showed a multimedia presentation of underwater
photography of the humpback whale, which they shot in the
Domincan Republic and Massachusetts. They also showed a multimedia presentation of their
own underwater photography of the humpback whale, shot in the
Domincan Republic and Massachusetts.
There was something new to learn for everybody! This assembly was sponsored by
Regnart PTA.

The
Regnart Reading Program
posted 07Jan2010
by Regnart Webmaster
This year's Regnart Reading Program was launched with a school-wide assembly for students on their first day
back from vacation.
The Reading Program fosters an interest in reading and encourages students to sample different types of literature.
Over the five week program, all students are encouraged to devote some of their spare time to independently read a few minutes each day. Each student is given a personal logbook to record the books read and the
minutes they spent reading that week. On Fridays, the Reading Program parent volunteers will record the minute read on
a class-by-class basis. You can check back here to see the weekly progress on the Reading Program thermometer.
There's a different suggested theme for each week, to encourage exploration. These are this year's themes:
- Week 1: Favorite Series
- Week 2: Cultural/International
- Week 3: Biography
- Week 4: Award Winning Titles
- Week 5: Fiction
The individual reading targets vary by age.
- K & 1st Grade: 10 min/day (50 min/wk)
- 2nd & 3rd Grade : 15 min/day (75 min/wk)
- 4th & 5th Grade : 20 min/day (100 min/wk)
All together, the entire school has a target of 46,650 minutes/wk
and 233,250 minutes for the entire program! That's almost
3900 hours! Although that sounds like a huge number, last
year's grand total was 593,406 minutes, almost 2.5x the target!
Parens are asked to review and sign their child's log every week. Please remember to have your child
bring their log in to school on Friday; the classroom parent volunteers will tally up their time and return
the logs the same day. If you have questions, please contact your
classroom Reading Program volunteer.
Have fun, learn something new, and READ, READ, READ!
The Reading Program is
sponsored by the Regnart PTA. The project is organized by chairpersons Jane Norton and Tina Okawa with
data tracking by Paula Yung.

Regnart PTA Membership Directory
posted 10Nov2009
by Regnart Webmaster
The 2009-2010 Regnart PTA Membership Directory was recently distributed to PTA
members. This useful resource contains contact information for
students, school staff, and the PTA organization.
If you didn't receive a Directory and would like to purchase one, you can do
so by joining the Regnart PTA. PTA Membership costs only $5/year
and includes a copy of the directory. To join, fill out this Membership
Form, designating $5 for PTA Membership. Turn this form in to the
Regnart Office with your payment.
Despite best efforts, errors do creep into the listings. Although we can’t correct problems in the Directory this
year, reporting errors in your listing content or how it was displayed can help
improve the accuracy of next year’s Directory. Please report errors to
regnart.membership@gmail.com.

Regnart
Reading Program Progress Meter- Final Report!
We've reached the end of this year's Reading Program, and the results were incredible!
The schoolwide target for Week Three was 46,650 minutes. In the final week,
Regnart Readers beat all previous weekly totals with a whopping 139,032 minutes (over 2,317 hours)! This is nearly 3X this week's target.
The final grand total of minutes was 605,207, an amazing 10,087 hours or 259% of the target.
How much reading is that? If you
wanted to read this much on your own, it would take 420 days, reading
24 hours a day!
This year's Readers recorded 11,800 minutes more than the grand total last year.
This is particularly amazing since Regnart has 35 LESS kids this year
than last!
We passed the 5-week target in only the second week, and set a new record for
total minutes. All classrooms exceeded their goals. There's no themometer
than can record this heat!!
Congratulations to all the students who surpassed every target. And many thanks
to Jane Norton, Tina Okawa, Paula Yung, and all the parent volunteers
that helped make this year's Reading Program possible.
Regnart Library Birthday Book Club
Celebrate your child's birthday while helping to support the Regnart Library
by participating in the Birthday Book Club.
With your donation, your child can make a book selection which includes a personalized
bookplate inside the front cover. The books are displayed on a special shelf in the library and your child has
the honor of being the first to check out the new book. A $20 donation
will cover most children's hardback books.
A birthday book in the library is especially memorable and will be enjoyed by
many during their Regnart years and beyond.
For more information on the Birthday Book Club, contact Louisa Roberts, Library
Media Clerk at 253-5250 x150.
