Welcome to the Tech Club at Regnart Elementary School
Our Tech Club is a fun-filled, exciting and dynamic way
for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders to learn about
Game Programming,
Photo Journalism/Web Page Design,
Animation,
Electronics,
Robotics,
and iMovie. New for 2011, Tech Club will be offering an introduction
to computer programming with Scratch Programming, based on
the Scratch language developed at the MIT Media Lab. Students
are taught and mentored by an all-volunteer parent team that has a special
interest
in
technology
and
helping
students
learn about various technologies.
Classes are held once a week on Mondays or Fridays before school (7:30-8:15 AM)
in the GLC. Each class typically lasts 8 weeks per session, with three 8-week sessions
offered during the regular school year. Classes may require some prior exposure to using
a computer (Mac or Windows) and the ability to follow directions.
There is a $20 donation per child to sign up for any of the classes.
Game Programming: In this class, students will learn to use and work
with the StageCast game programming tool which will
allow the student to create their own game and characters. Students interested in this class
should be computer literate and have some knowledge of using a computer and the ability to follow
basic instructions. You can download a 120-day trial copy of StageCast
here.
Stage Cast is available for Mac and Windows

Journalism / Web Page Design: In this class, students will learn
the basics of Microsoft
PowerPoint
to create a interesting and compelling story using sound, images and text.
Students will also learn HTML (HyperText Markup Language) to compose web
pages with images, special fonts and graphics. They will also explore drag-and-drop
web page construction using Apple iWeb.
Animation: In this class, students will learn basic animation
techniques using a digital camera and computer to capture small movements in
drawings and objects to create short animated movies.
Electronics: In this class, students learn basic electronic
circuit theory and work with capacitors, resistors and integrated circuits to
build an oscillator circuit that flashes lights and produces sound.
Robotics In this class, students get an opportunity to
explore both the hardware and software aspects of robotics through the
LEGO Mindstorm Robotics Invention System.
Students construct a robotic vehicle and learn
simple programming concepts using a click and drag programming environment.
They are given several challenges that introduce them to program flows, algorithms,
and sensors.
iMovie: In this class, students will work with the
iMovie
application on the Macintosh. Students will learn the basics of how the program
works, how to create their own movie and special tips and techniques they can use
for their own movies.
Scratch Programming: (beginning in Session 2) Learn
fundamental software engineering techniques using the Scratch programming
language. Scratch is a visual programming language created to make it easy
to create and share animations, music, and art and to experiment with computer
languages. It includes elements of sharing and collaboration.
