International Walk to School Day 2003

Montclaire Tigers joined children from around the world to promote health, safety, physical activity and concern for the environment by walking and biking to school on International Walk to School Day, October 8, 2003. Some of the highlights:

  • Los Altos Mayor Kris Casto was our celebrity crossing guard.

  • Four walking school busses, including one led by principal Todd Shimada, carried balloons and signs on their journey to school.

  • Albertson's provided refreshments to members of the walking school bus that began their journey in the Albertson's parking lot.

  • Walkers and bicyclists were greeted at school with "I walked to school today" and "I spared the air today" stickers.

  • 71% of Montclaire students walked or rode bike to school.

Congratulations to Ms. Cicero's 2nd-grade class and Ms. Huang's 5th-grade class for having the highest participation (94% and 84%, respectively) on Walk to School Day!

We hope that Walk to School Day served to remind everyone of the simple joy of walking to school, the health benefits of regular daily activity, and the need for safe places to walk and bike. We also hope that it will motivate our community into changing behaviors and conditions so that students can safely walk or bike to school every day.

Montclaire Principal Todd Shimada welcomes Los Altos Mayor Kris Casto to Walk to School Day. Mayor Casto (who walked to Montclaire from home that morning) served as celebrity crossing guard in the St. Joseph Ave. crosswalk.
