Tiger Tracks Tips

Tiger Tracks:  Safe Routes to Montclaire

Tiger Tracks makes the following suggestions for walking or biking safely to Montclaire School.

  • When travelling on busy streets such as Grant Rd. and St. Joseph Ave.:
    • Walk, scooter, or skate on the sidewalk.
    • Bicyclists may ride on the sidewalk, but must yield to pedestrians and must walk their bikes in the crosswalks.
    • Bicyclists riding in the bike lane must ride on the right hand side.
    • Cross the street only in designated crosswalks.
  • When travelling on residential streets without sidewalks:
    • Walk on the left hand side.
    • Ride bike on the right hand side.
    • Cross the street at corners.
  • When crossing Foothill Expressway:
    • Cross only in pedestrian crosswalks. Note: there is not a crosswalk on the east side of Grant Rd./St. Joseph Ave.
    • Use the pedestrian push-button.
    • Cross only when the white pedestrian symbol is displayed on the signal.
  • When crossing Grant Road: Use crosswalks at Foothill Expressway, Morton Ave., or in front of Woodland Library.
  • Use pedestrian pathways to shorten your route or to avoid busy streets:
    • 2067/2071 Kent Dr. to Montclaire playing fields (rear entrance to Montclaire)
    • End of St. Joseph Ave. at the Hwy 280 overpass.
    • 1601/1611 Ben Roe Dr. to 1614/1624 Clay Dr.
    • Elnora Ct. to Hollidale Ct.
    • 1862/1864 Dalehurst Ave. to 1825/1827 Austin Ave.
    • Brucito Ave. to Green Oaks Ln.
    • Miguel Ave. to Nightingale Ct.
    • Citation Dr. to Via Huerto. Note: this pathway is blocked by a locked gated. Contact Tiger Tracks for information on how to get a key to the gate.
  • Be extra cautious at these hot spots:
    • St. Simon School driveways. Cars entering and exiting the parking lot often fail to yield to pedestrians and bicyclists on the sidewalk, so be prepared to stop.
    • Grant Rd./Morton Ave. crosswalk. Do not cross until the crossing guard says it’s ok. Beware of cars swerving into the right turn lane.
    • Deodara Dr. at Arboretum Dr. Watch for cars speeding down Arboretum toward Foothill.
  • Obey the Crossing Guards!
    • City-funded crossing guards are on duty in the crosswalks at Foothill Expressway/Grand Rd. and Grant Rd./Morton Ave. from 7:30am – 8:20am and 2:40pm – 3:20pm (2:10pm – 3:20pm on Tuesdays).
    • Montclaire parent volunteers are on duty in the crosswalks adjacent to Montclaire school from 8:15am – 8:35am.
    • Montclaire teachers are on duty in the St. Joseph Ave. crosswalk on the east side of school from 2:35pm - 2:45pm and from 3:05pm - 3:15pm.
  • Wear safe gear such as:
    • Brightly-colored clothing.
    • Reflective tape or trim on shoes, backpacks, vests, or bikes.
    • Helmets when skating or riding bikes or scooters.
    • Flashing red lights on bikes or backpacks.
  • Don’t travel alone! Always walk or bike to school with friends or an adult.
  • Minimize backpack load. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, to help prevent injury, children’s backpacks should weigh no more than 20 percent of their body weight.
  • If walking or biking isn't possible, ride a bus or carpool to minimize traffic around Montclaire School.
    • School Bus: Cupertino Union School District provides bus service to Montclaire for students living east of Foothill Expressway. Contact the CUSD Transportation Department for information about bus passes and locations of bus stops.
    • Public Bus: VTA Bus 23 stops near the corner of Grant Rd. and Foothill Expressway at approximately 8:15am and 3:30pm on weekdays. A crossing guard is on duty to assist you across Grant Rd. and Foothill Expressway.
    • Carpool: Consult your PTA directory or ask Montclaire families living near you that might be interested in carpooling to Montclaire.
